About GambitTales Play
How it works
GambitTales teaches the six tactics that win most chess games — the pin, fork, skewer, discovered attack, double attack, and x-ray. Each one is a character with a story, and the way they behave is the tactic itself.
- Tactics Trainer — read a real position, name which tactic wins, then play the winning move on the board. A hint unlocks after a first wrong try, and every move explains itself. It’s the same "name it, then solve it" idea as the app.
- Pattern Detective — a quick-fire drill: just spot which of the six tactics is hiding in each position. It builds the fast pattern-sense the trainer puts to work.
- Tactics Rush — a 90-second speed round where the puzzles climb in difficulty. Three misses ends the run. Your best score stays on this device.
- Puzzle of the Day — one fresh tactical puzzle every day, the same one for everyone, with no account needed.
- Free Play — play a full game against the coach at your chosen side and difficulty, and put the tactics to work in a real game.
- Review Your Misses — the tactics you get wrong come back on a spaced schedule (soon at first, then further apart each time you solve them cleanly), so your own mistakes become your practice list. It’s the single best habit in chess training.
- One tactic at a time — pick the pin, the fork, or any single motif to drill just those puzzles with the character who teaches it.
See the shape of each tactic
The quickest way to learn a tactic is to see it with nothing else on the board. Here’s the pure shape of each of the six — just the pieces that make the pattern.

Meet the cast
Sir Pinwell is the pin, the Twin Knights are the fork, Lady Skewer is the skewer, Captain Crossfire is the discovered attack, the Glass Lantern is the double attack, and Veil & Vow are the x-ray. Each character behaves like the tactic they teach. You can read their illustrated stories over on the cast pages.
Our privacy promise
GambitTales Play is free, works offline, and collects nothing. No accounts, no ads, no tracking, and no data ever leaves your device — your level, streak, and best rush score are saved only in this browser.
Losing is part of it
Even the strongest players miss tactics on the way up. A wrong move here never costs you anything — it just points you to the stronger idea next time, then shows you the winning move.
